CLUB HISTORY

Established in the late 1970s, Modesto Youth Soccer Association
Modesto Youth Soccer Association / Ajax United began as a local youth‐soccer initiative in the Central Valley, committed to creating an inclusive space for players of all ages and abilities.

The Story of Modesto Youth Soccer Association

For generations, soccer has brought families, neighbors, and communities together. In Modesto, that tradition lives through the Modesto Youth Soccer Association (MYSA), an organization built on the simple belief that every child deserves the opportunity to play, learn, and grow through the game of soccer.

What began as a local effort to provide organized youth soccer has grown into one of the most recognized soccer communities in the Central Valley. Through the dedication of volunteers, coaches, parents, and players, MYSA has become a place where young athletes not only learn the game but develop confidence, friendships, and life-long memories.

Building a Home for Soccer

In the early years, soccer in Modesto was powered almost entirely by volunteers. Parents lined fields, organized teams, coached practices, and worked together to create opportunities for their children to play. Their commitment laid the foundation for what MYSA would eventually become, a thriving organization serving thousands of players each year.

Over time, the club expanded to include recreational programs for beginners, developmental opportunities for younger players, and adult leagues that continue the love of the game beyond youth competition.

The Birth of Ajax United

As soccer continued to grow in Modesto, so did the desire for a higher level of training and competition. In 1976, MYSA launched its competitive program, Ajax United, creating a pathway for players who wanted to pursue the sport at an advanced level.

Ajax United quickly established itself as one of Northern California’s respected competitive soccer programs. Over the years, Ajax teams have competed in top leagues, won championships, and helped develop players who would go on to compete at the collegiate and professional levels. Among those alumni are U.S. National Team players Tisha Venturini and Heath Pearce, whose journeys began on the same fields where young players continue to develop today.

A Community Tradition

Today, soccer fields across Modesto come alive every season with the energy of thousands of players wearing the colors of MYSA and Ajax United. From the youngest recreational players taking their first touches on the ball to competitive athletes pursuing the highest levels of youth soccer, the club provides a place for everyone to belong.

A central hub of activity is Mary Grogan Community Park, where countless matches, practices, and tournaments have been played. For many families in the region, the park has become synonymous with youth soccer and the memories that come with it.

Driven by Volunteers

One of the most important parts of MYSA’s story is the people who make it possible. The club has always been powered by volunteers and parents who step forward to coach, board members who dedicate time to guide the organization, and referees and staff who help ensure that every match day runs smoothly.

Their passion and commitment have allowed MYSA to grow into one of the largest youth soccer organizations in the Central Valley while maintaining the sense of community that started it all.

Looking Forward

While much has changed since the club’s early days, the mission of MYSA remains the same: to provide a positive, challenging, and rewarding soccer experience for every player who steps onto the field.

Today, MYSA and Ajax United continue to build on decades of tradition while preparing the next generation of players for the future, whether their path leads to competitive soccer, college athletics, or simply a lifelong love of the game.

The story of MYSA is still being written, and with every season, every player, and every match, a new chapter is added to the legacy of soccer in Modesto.
